{"id":1289,"date":"2022-04-17T23:59:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-18T04:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scope-eye.net\/?p=1289"},"modified":"2022-04-19T11:05:36","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T16:05:36","slug":"facing-da-feet-day-64","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scope-eye.net\/?p=1289","title":{"rendered":"Facing Defeat (day 64)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I poured the second half of the upper leg mold and made some headway on the top of the foot:<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_6.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_6_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"Today I worked on the top of the foot\"><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nAfter giving the first half of the upper leg mold a few days to cure I decided I didn&#8217;t want to wait any longer, so I removed it from the Legos and started work on creating the second half of the mold. This required some careful setup: as I built a new lego box around the first half of the mold, I found that this would flex the mold a bit, causing it to form gaps around the part. I trimmed the edges of the mold a bit, and tweaked the position of the mold slightly to get the part to fit better.<br \/>\nAfter that I faced another problem: as usual, my modeling supplies are somewhat in chaos and disrepair. In this case, the mold release spray used to keep the two mold halves from sticking to each other: I was able to find some, but the spray nozzle from the can had gone missing. I borrowed a nozzle from another spray can, but it didn&#8217;t quite fit, causing a bit of a mess. I also had to deal with the usual poor state of the mold rubber itself. But in the end I think I managed to get the second half of the upper leg mold started properly.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_1_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I pulled the first half of the mold. Looks pretty good!\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_2_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"Mold release spray, but no nozzzle (sigh)\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_3.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_3_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I set up the part in the first half of the mold to prepare to pour the second half\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_4.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_4_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I used a spray nozzle from another spray can, it didn't fit right and it made this mess...\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_5.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_upper_leg_mold_5_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"Starting the pour for the second half of the mold - I started with a thin layer to try to get all the air bubbles out from areas in contact with the part.\"><\/a><br \/>\nAfter that I decided to work on the foot parts a bit. When I did the picture recently with most of the leg parts, it bothered me that the top of the foot was missing, so I decided to make that. I started by positioning the gray part of the foot at the right position and orientation, then I filled in with clay, put on a layer of epoxy putty, and carved the putty down to the shape I needed.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_1_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I started by cutting some plastic guides to help me set the boxy gray part of the foot at the right position and angle\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_2_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I glued the plastic guides to the inside of the boxy bit to stand it at the proper elevation inside the foot\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_3.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_3_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I pretty much just eyeballed where to put it in the foot\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_4.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_4_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I roughed out the shape of the top of the foot with clay\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_5.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_5_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I mixed up some epoxy putty and layered it on - I used a bit too much honestly\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_6.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220417_foot_work_6_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"After trimming it down a bit, it was much better off...\"><\/a><br \/>\nIt&#8217;ll be another few days before I can check out the new mold half.
