{"id":1328,"date":"2022-08-31T23:55:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T04:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scope-eye.net\/?p=1328"},"modified":"2022-12-28T13:25:54","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T18:25:54","slug":"100-days-later-70-days-remaining","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scope-eye.net\/?p=1328","title":{"rendered":"100 Days Later (70 days remaining)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year I did a &#8220;100 day challenge&#8221; to work on my Zaku Kai project: The idea of the challenge was to work on the project every day for 100 days. It was a great experience in a lot of ways, but by the end of it I was ready to take a break. Now with <a href=\"https:\/\/thosegundamguys.org\/southern-california-gundam-model-competition\/\">SCGMC<\/a> looming, I&#8217;m returning to the project with the aim of having it done in time for the show.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_overview.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_overview_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"The current state of the project. It looks much the same as at the end of the 100 days, but the difference is that more parts are mounted together instead of held together with clay.\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_overview_2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_overview_2_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"Another view. Leg, hip, torso, and skirt armor are now more properly connected together\"><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nFollowing the break I found it a little difficult to get back into the project. I had actually intended to do &#8220;another 100 days&#8221; leading up to SCGMC, but struggled to achieve something that felt suitable for my return to the project. Ultimately I decided to focus on the hip area: building out the missing joints to connect the torso, hip, and leg together, building the missing skirt armor pieces, and mounting the skirt pieces to the hips. It&#8217;s been a fair bit of work, and there&#8217;s still more to do with it, but I think it&#8217;s a nice bit of progress.<br \/>\nFirst up was the connection from the hip to the leg. I had already set up a ball joint in the leg, so I really just needed to set up the point where the ball joint would connect to the hip. Generally I use &#8220;Perfect Parts Collection&#8221; ball joints for applications like this. They&#8217;re great, strong joints, but they can crack and break down over time. So often I&#8217;ll connect them with a polycap, so I can easily replace the joint if it breaks. After taking some time to determine just where the ball joint should connect, I cut a hole in the hip part for the polycaps, then packed the area around the polycaps with epoxy putty so that when I reproduce the part in resin, it&#8217;ll be easy to pop in the polycaps and secure them in place.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_hip_joint_1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_hip_joint_1_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I cut the hole for the polycaps. I had previously had just a hole drilled in the side for the ball joint to connect, that was a short-term solution, and also I had to revise its location a bit.\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_hip_joint_2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_hip_joint_2_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I filled the hole with epoxy putty to secure the polycaps. When I recast the hip part in resin I'll be able to pop in the polycaps and then secure them with epoxy or something.\"><\/a><br \/>\nFrom there I wanted to figure out the connection between the hips and the torso. I&#8217;ve put a fair amount of effort into making sure that the finished Zaku will have some mobility in its midsection, but it&#8217;s always been a bit of a puzzle, how to get a good forward bend, considering there&#8217;s that power cable receiver right up front. The belly and torso basically have to move up and around that for the torso to bend forward. I considered a few options, but ultiately decided on one joint at the back of the hips, used to elevate the upper body, and another joint at the bottom of the midriff, to allow rotation and tilting forward. This achieved a pretty significant forward bend&#8230;  But it can&#8217;t really bend backward at all. That would be tough anyway with the rear skirts and backpack taking up so much space anyway. The joint works pretty well but I may need to rethink it, as it&#8217;s not really strong enough to carry the weight of the body at this point.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_1_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I started by building a polycap joint into the back of the hip, used to elevate the upper body\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_2_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I began hollowing out the bottom of the midriff part to make space for the joint that would provide forward bend and rotation\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_3.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_3_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"With the joint assembled, the body starts to come together...\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_4.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_4_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"This is how it looks when I use the torso-tilt joint\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_5.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_5_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"This is how it looks when I use both the torso tilt joint and the new midriff joint\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_6.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_midriff_joint_6_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I decided to rework the polycap joint at the back of the hips, position it a little bit higher up for better clearance\"><\/a><br \/>\nWith the structural joints of the hip and waist finally coming together, I turned my attention to the skirt armor. There&#8217;s a lot here that needed attention: missing parts, incomplete parts, parts that I never actually built previously at all. The rear skirts were still relatively crude: the one on the right already included the cutout outline for the thruster that&#8217;s supposed to go there (but not the thruster itself) but it was missing entirely from the skirt on the left. Also the shape of the rear skirt parts was extremely boxy. I corrected the missing detail and reshaped the rear skirts to give them their more proper, curved shape.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_rear_skirts_1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_rear_skirts_1_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"The state of the rear skirts before the updates: at this point I've outlined where the thruster on the left skirt should go, but hadn't cut it out yet. Also the edges of the rear quarter skirts are very angular, I carved and sanded them down to produce a smoother, curved part.\"><\/a><br \/>\nI also began work on the side skirts: I had made parts for the side skirts at some point in the past, but those parts have been lost. The new ones, for now, are just rectangular blocks attached at the correct locations via polycaps. I&#8217;ll be refining these, of course, to include more detail.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_side_skirt_1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_side_skirt_1_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I built up the side skirt out of styrene plate, with styrene strip in between to establish spacing between the plates. It's crude at the moment but the important thing was to get the basic shape and work out the connection point.\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_side_skirt_2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_side_skirt_2_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I worked on the problem of how to incorporate a polycap for the side skirts into the hip gantry. Being able to actually move the side skirt is actually not much of a concern, though. The skirts are large enough that the legs have a fair bit of room to move even if the skirts were immobile.\"><\/a><br \/>\nThen I looked to the front skirts: unlike the immobile rear skirts, or the side skirts which are mobile but don&#8217;t really need to be&#8230;  Mobility is important for the front skirts if the legs are to be able to move well. It&#8217;s kind of a complicated arrangement, too, as the front skirts are jammed right up against the bottom of the power cable receiver. They kind of have to swing around that somehow in order to swing forward. I decided to mount the front skirts on flexible springs, and tried a few different arrangements. To be honest I may need to rethink how I&#8217;ve done this.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_1_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"For my first attempt, I mounted the front skirt with a spring that sits under the gantry plate\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_2_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"Unfortunately this means a short bit of spring would have to stretch quite a lot to get the skirt around the cable receiver.\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_3.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_3_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I tried again, this time mounting the spring higher up, a little above the gantry plate\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_4.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_4_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"This seems to work a little better, the spring doesn't have to stretch as far. But it is still hard to have enough slack in the spring for it to stretch sufficiently\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_5.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_5_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"My third attempt: I mounted the spring a little bit lower than on the second attempt, and farther back to try to provide more slack in the spring for it to stretch\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_6.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_skirt_mounting_6_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"It seems to work pretty well, but it's still hard to provide enough slack in the spring. It always feels like the spring is going to get pulled out of its socket.\"><\/a><br \/>\nFinally, I began work on the front quarter skirts. I didn&#8217;t feel comfortable doing too much with work building or mounting these parts until I had the mounting of the other skirts pretty well sorted out, because these front quarter skirts really need to bridge the gap between the front center skirts and the side skirts&#8230;  It made more sense to me to work out the locations for those neighboring pieces first, then build up the front quarter skirts to fit those gaps. With these last skirt pieces done I can finally see the whole skirted hip assembly, which is a part of the Zaku Kai design that I really love.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_quarter_skirt_1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_quarter_skirt_1_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I started by laying out the basic shape of the front quarter skirt in styrene plate, and laying down strips as spacers\"><\/a> <a href=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_quarter_skirt_2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/model-data\/1_100_Zaku_Kai\/zakufz_20220831_front_quarter_skirt_2_thumb.jpeg\" title=\"I haven't really mounted the front quarter skirts yet, but this is how the whole hip and skirt assembly looks, all together. It's a thing of beauty. This also shows the square pegs I used to mount the rear skirts to the gantry plate.\"><\/a><br \/>\nThis project has a very long history. At this point, I&#8217;ve had this project in the works almost as long as I&#8217;ve been in this hobby. Eventually it began to feel like it would never end, and so as a result I didn&#8217;t work on it, focusing instead on other, more &#8220;finishable&#8221; projects so I could participate in model shows, etc. The 100 day project was great for me in a lot of ways. It really helped me get engaged with this project again, and to see it as something that I could finish, if I put in the work. At the end of the 100 days I really needed a break, I took some time to pursue other interests for a while.
