It never works. But this time it was at least a lot of fun, and I made a lot of great progress on a new project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_preview_1.jpeg\" title=\"I am not Char.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_preview_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_preview_2.jpeg\" title=\"You might wonder if I'm Char: I assure you, I am not.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_preview_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I got this kit as part of a trade, kind of on a whim, but when I got my hands on it I decided I really liked it. Bulky kits are just really cool, and while I wouldn&#8217;t call this thing anime-accurate, its chunky design style gives it a very bold look.<\/p>\n<p>This time the event in question was Patcon, the show held by my local IPMS club. This was the first Patcon held by the club in several years, and I was excited to see it back. I wanted to be a part of it, so I took a bit of time off and spent most of the last week prior to the con working on my Rick Dias.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThis is my first project in my new workspace. We moved this year, and it&#8217;s taken a long time to get things settled to the point that I could get anything done.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_new_workspace.jpeg\" title=\"Sieg Zeon!\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_new_workspace_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_new_workspace_2.jpeg\" title=\"A little more settled in, but terribly cluttered.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_new_workspace_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t built a lot of MG kits, and so this one presented me with a challenge I&#8217;m not used to coping with: there are seam lines on the legs which must be dealt with, but to glue those seams together means trapping the inner frame, locking the whole leg together. As a result I think it will be a bit challenging to paint the legs.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_1.jpeg\" title=\"This is the main offending seam on the lower leg. Even in the kit instructions this seam is untreated.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_2.jpeg\" title=\"After initial gluing and sanding of the seam - much better.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_3.jpeg\" title=\"The seam did turn out to be a bit stubborn.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_3_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_4.jpeg\" title=\"A bit of seam misalignment in my assembly - took a bit of elbow grease to smooth it out.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_4_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_5.jpeg\" title=\"First leg mostly done, got started on the second.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_5_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_6.jpeg\" title=\"The seam where the rounded part meets the back of the upper leg was one of the main reasons I chose not to keep the upper leg separate from the knee joint.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_6_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_7.jpeg\" title=\"Leg seam work is done... Or is it? Primer will tell.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_legs_7_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The arms appeared to be somewhat easier to deal with than the legs, due in part to a more HG-style construction and the seam on the upper arm being hidden well enough that I didn&#8217;t feel I needed to treat it.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_shoulders_1.jpeg\" title=\"The shoulder armor is built up out of a few different pieces, which results in some awkward seams.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_shoulders_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_shoulders_2.jpeg\" title=\"After sanding, the seams look better.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_shoulders_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I altered the arms a bit to deal with seams on the forearms and simplify painting a bit.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_arms_1.jpeg\" title=\"I broke up the arm parts a bit so I could put the cables in after the rest of the arm was assembled.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_arms_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_arms_2.jpeg\" title=\"Components of the forearm after alteration\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_arms_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hands presented some challenges: the fingers are jointed at two knuckles, but the second knuckle joint has a gap around it, so I replaced part of the finger with styrene plate to cover up the gap. The fingers also had mold separation lines and slight warping issues that make them a bit frustrating to deal with. I drilled out the birdlime launchers and did my best on the seam where the two halves of the hands meet. Gotta love these beefy Zeta hands.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_hands_1.jpeg\" title=\"The hand, pretty much kit-stock. It adheres well, carves easily, and fills the gaps.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_hands_6_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_hands_7.jpeg\" title=\"After sanding the SGT - still some mistakes but good enough to prime it.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_hands_7_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When building the skirt thrusters I ran into an issue I&#8217;ve been grappling with on the MG Geara Doga: the thrusters have colored inserts which make the thrusters look too thick. I decided to use the existing parts but carve them down a bit.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_boosters_1.jpeg\" title=\"Stock skirt thrusters\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_boosters_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_boosters_2.jpeg\" title=\"Skirt thrusters after modifying one of them\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_boosters_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A while back I established this rule for myself: monoeyes should always be lit. When the model is assembled the opening is covered by the belly part, and the battery holder can be accessed by removing the belly and the armor from the back of the torso.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_chest_block_1.jpeg\" title=\"Working out the site for the coin cell\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_chest_block_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_chest_block_2.jpeg\" title=\"Installing the coin cell holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_chest_block_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wanted to install a microcontroller to control the LED in the eye, give it a bit of dynamic behavior when it&#8217;s on display. I used one of my many Raven boards which I designed a few years back. One of the really handy features of these boards is it&#8217;s easy to cut &#8217;em down to a smaller size if you can spare some of the I\/O pins. I puzzled a bit about where to hide the microcontroller (it&#8217;s harder to hide things in the chest block than you might think) and ultimately settled on a location in the armpit.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_1.jpeg\" title=\"Raven board cut down to size for this installation\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_2.jpeg\" title=\"I didn't have the surface-mount resistor I needed so I had to use a normal one.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_3.jpeg\" title=\"Underside showing the pin connector that will be accessible for reprogramming the board and connecting the LED from the head.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_3_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_4.jpeg\" title=\"Wiring test (LED off - blinking LED program)\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_4_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_5.jpeg\" title=\"Wiring test, LED on\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_raven_5_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The weapons were a bit challenging due to the seam all the way around the perimiter. I probably could have reduced the work needed a bit by aligning the parts a bit more carefully before sanding. This kit has a hand-peg system for the weapons, but the weapons will be back-mounted a lot of the time, so I removed the pegs so the weapons would look nicer.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_1.jpeg\" title=\"I'll admit it, this was a really irritating seam to deal with.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_2.jpeg\" title=\"Here you can see the hand-pegs on the weapon grip...\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_3.jpeg\" title=\"Get lost, ugly hand-pegs.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_3_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_4.jpeg\" title=\"The darker areas on the back end of the bazooka were missed by the sandpaper because they are sunken. This sort of thing shows up on virtually every part of the kit. I sanded pretty much the whole kit to deal with the irregular surfaces.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_4_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_5.jpeg\" title=\"Irregular surface has been sanded down.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_bazooka_5_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As more and more stuff got done the project got to that point where I had to start going through everything, making sure it was ready for primer.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_ready_parts_1.jpeg\" title=\"I use one part of the box to hold the parts that I haven't given their final polish, and the other part to hold those that are ready for primer. Gradually the latter collects more parts\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_ready_parts_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_holdouts_1.jpeg\" title=\"These parts took longer to prepare for various reasons. As the deadline approached I felt I was going to have to prime the others before finishing these.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_holdouts_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With all the sanding I did on the surface of this kit to remove sink-marks, it left a lot of dust on everything. To deal with it I decided to give the parts a cleaning. This is something I used to do to all my kits, but in more recent years it&#8217;s become more rare that I&#8217;ll do this.<br \/>\n<a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_scrubbin_1.jpeg\" title=\"I scrubbed the parts with a toothbrush and soapy water to get dust off.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_scrubbin_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_drying_1.jpeg\" title=\"My disorganized pile of parts after the soap wash\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_drying_1_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_drying_2.jpeg\" title=\"My rather more organized pile of parts after rinsing everything off.\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"model-data\/1_100_Rick_Dias\/rick_dias_20130929_drying_2_thumb.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next up, the parts will be primed, and I&#8217;ll think about specifics of the paint job. It&#8217;s exciting to see this project come together.
