Punch the Spike (day 15)

Not a lot of progress today – since the pauldron is shaping up I think I need to start seeing how it will look with the spikes on. I formed the spike part years ago, and made molds to recast it – but as with a lot of materials related to this project those spike molds have been lost. I decided to try a one-part mold for the part this time.

There are benefits and downsides to this style of mold. Compared to the two-part mold I previously used for the spike, a one-part mold should have less distortion and no parting line. However it also becomes harder to produce a good, bubble-free casting, especially without my pressure casting gear set up. This mold might not work out, but I’ll give it a try.
